About 2205|Duplex stainless steel (22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum). A 50/50 mix of austenite and ferrite phases that gives roughly twice the yield strength of 304 or 316 with superior chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance. Used in chemical processing, oil and gas, pulp and paper, and marine applications where standard austenitics fail. Machines harder than 316 due to the higher strength and duplex microstructure. Needs rigid setups, sharp coated carbide, and 30-40% slower speeds than 316. Chips are tough and stringy. Compare to 316 (easier to machine, adequate for less aggressive environments) and 2507 super duplex (even stronger, even harder to machine).
