About 309|High-chromium, high-nickel austenitic stainless (23/13) designed for high-temperature service. Maintains its strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures where 304 and 316 would fail. Used for furnace parts, heat exchangers, kiln linings, and thermal processing equipment. Machines similarly to 304 but slightly tougher due to the higher alloy content. Not commonly used for ambient-temperature applications where 304 or 316 would be cheaper and perfectly adequate. Compare to 310 (even higher temperature capability) and 304 (adequate below 800°F, much cheaper).
