About 1095|High-carbon steel (0.95% carbon). The classic spring and blade steel. Maximum hardness (HRC 62-65) among the plain carbon steels but brittle if not tempered properly. This is leaf spring, hand saw blade, and knife blade material. Machine only in the annealed or spheroidized condition. After hardening, it's grinding only. Very poor weldability. Compare to
1084 (slightly lower carbon, more forgiving to heat treat) and W1 tool steel (similar carbon content but with better manufacturing controls).
