About A516 GR70|Pressure vessel plate. 70 KSI tensile (not yield), with 260 MPa (38 KSI) minimum yield. Specifically designed for welded pressure vessels and boilers where notch toughness at moderate and lower temperatures is critical. Silicon-killed with fine grain structure and tighter chemistry controls than A36, especially on sulfur and phosphorus. Must meet Charpy impact testing at specific temperatures. Machines slightly better than A36 according to machinists who've cut both. Comes with mill scale and is usually flame-cut to size. Thicker plates (over 1.5 inches) are normalized. If you're machining A516, your customer probably needs MTRs with heat and slab numbers for ASME code compliance. Compare to A36 (structural, no impact testing, cheaper) and A537 (higher strength pressure vessel plate).
About Plate|Thick flat stock, generally 3/16" and up, used for machined base plates, fixture plates, wear surfaces, and structural fabrication. Heavier grades get milled, drilled, and tapped directly.
