About SS GR36|Structural Shapes Grade 36. This is essentially A36 but specifically designated for rolled structural shapes (W-beams, channels, angles) rather than plate or bar. The 'SS' prefix indicates it's produced to the structural shapes specification. Same 36 KSI yield as A36. Not a machining material. Compare to A36 (same strength level for plate/bar) and A572 GR50 (higher strength structural shapes).
About Plate|Thick flat stock, generally 3/16" and up, used for machined base plates, fixture plates, wear surfaces, and structural fabrication. Heavier grades get milled, drilled, and tapped directly.
