About 272|Yellow brass (63% copper, 37% zinc). Near the maximum zinc content for single-phase alpha brass. Good balance of strength and formability, slightly cheaper than 260 due to higher zinc content. Used for architectural trim, engraving plates, and general decorative applications. Machinability is mediocre — better than pure copper, worse than leaded brasses. Compare to 260 (more copper, better formability) and C360 (leaded, dramatically better machinability).
