Zinc is a key alloying element in brass and galvanizing processes.

About 464|Naval brass (60% copper, 39.25% zinc, 0.75% tin). The tin addition significantly improves dezincification resistance in seawater compared to standard yellow brass. This is propeller shaft material, marine hardware material, and turnbuckle material. Machines adequately but not great — no lead, so chips are long and stringy. Used wherever brass needs to survive salt water long-term. Compare to 280 (cheaper, no tin, less seawater resistant) and C360 (much better machinability but not rated for marine immersion).
About Round Bar|The default starting stock for lathe work. It gets turned, bored, and parted into shafts, pins, bushings, spacers, and just about anything round.
