About 600|Inconel 600 (76% nickel, 15.5% chromium, 8% iron). A high-temperature, corrosion-resistant nickel alloy that maintains strength and oxidation resistance up to 2000°F. This is furnace fixture material, heat treatment retort material, and nuclear steam generator tubing. Machines poorly. Think of the worst 304 stainless experience and multiply it. Extreme work-hardening, gummy chips, and rapid tool wear. Use sharp ceramic or coated carbide inserts, very rigid setups, high feeds, moderate speeds, and flood coolant. Compare to 304 stainless (much cheaper, adequate below 1500°F) and Inconel
625 (better corrosion resistance, even harder to machine).
