About R405|Monel R-405. A free-machining version of Alloy 400 with controlled sulfur additions. Same nickel-copper composition and corrosion resistance as 400 but dramatically easier to machine. Chips break cleaner and tool life improves significantly. The sulfur does slightly reduce corrosion resistance in some environments. Used for high-volume machined parts requiring Monel properties: valve stems, pump shafts, and fittings. Compare to Alloy 400 (better corrosion resistance, much harder to machine) and Alloy 200 (pure nickel, different corrosion profile).
