About 1141|Medium-carbon resulfurized steel. Sits between the free-machining 11xx grades and the plain carbon 10xx grades. The 0.40% carbon gives it more strength than 1117 or 1215, while the sulfur addition improves machinability over plain 1045. Can be induction hardened for surface hardness applications. Used for parts that need moderate strength and decent machinability without going to an alloy steel. Think medium-duty shafts, studs, and pins where 1018 is too soft and 4140 is overkill. Compare to 1144 (slightly more carbon, higher strength, the Stressproof base) and 1045 (plain carbon, no sulfur, tougher but gummier to machine).
