About 301|An austenitic stainless that work-hardens rapidly. Lower chromium and nickel than 304 (17/7 vs 18/8), which makes it less corrosion resistant but allows significant strengthening through cold work. Used for structural applications, springs, and anywhere you need strength from a stainless without heat treatment. Available in various tempers from annealed (soft) to full hard. The harder tempers are tough on tools. In the annealed condition it machines like a slightly worse version of 304. Mainly a sheet and strip product. Compare to 304 (better corrosion resistance, less work-hardenable) and 17-7 PH (precipitation-hardenable, even higher achievable strength).

About Sheet|Thin flat stock, generally under 3/16", used for stamping, bending, shearing, and laser/plasma cutting. It's the starting material for enclosures, panels, brackets, and formed sheet metal parts.
