About 316L|Low carbon version of 316, purpose-built for welded fabrications in aggressive corrosive environments. The low carbon prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding, maintaining corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Slightly lower tensile and yield strength than standard 316, but the difference is minimal. Machines identically to 316 with the same challenges: gummy cutting, stringy chips, and high tool wear. Machinability around 40%. The material of choice when the spec says 316 and the fabrication involves welding, especially for chemical processing, offshore, and pharmaceutical applications. If you don't need to weld it, standard 316 (or dual-cert) works fine.
About Flat Bar|Rectangular solid stock used for brackets, fixtures, machine bases, and any part where you need a wide, flat starting profile. It's common in both machining and structural fabrication.
