About A992|ASTM A992 is the current standard for hot-rolled structural steel W-shapes (wide-flange beams). 50 KSI minimum yield with controlled chemistry (maximum carbon, carbon equivalent limits) for improved weldability. This essentially replaced A36 and A572 as the go-to spec for wide-flange beams in structural steel construction. If you're buying W-beams today, they're almost certainly A992. Not a machining material. Compare to A572 GR50 (the plate and bar equivalent) and A36 (older spec, lower strength).
