About 5086|Stronger than 5052 with similar corrosion resistance, used in marine hulls and superstructures where more structural strength is needed. Not heat-treatable, so strength comes from work hardening. Welds well and retains most of its strength at the weld joint, which is a big deal in shipbuilding. Machinability is fair at best. Like most 5xxx alloys, it’s softer and gummier than the heat-treatable 6xxx series. If 5052 isn’t strong enough and you can’t use 6061 because of corrosion concerns, 5086 fills the gap.
About Plate|Thick flat stock, generally 3/16" and up, used for machined base plates, fixture plates, wear surfaces, and structural fabrication. Heavier grades get milled, drilled, and tapped directly.
