polyethylene. The impact-resistant, self-lubricating, noise-dampening workhorse of industrial plastics. Extremely low coefficient of friction, excellent abrasion resistance, and virtually unbreakable under impact. FDA-approved. Used for conveyor guides, chute liners, wear strips, dock fenders, and food processing equipment. Machines easily but can be grabby, so use sharp tools, moderate speeds, and make sure the material is well-supported. The softness (Shore D 62-66) means it deflects under clamping pressure, so don't over-tighten. Compare to
HDPE (cheaper, less wear-resistant) and
Nylon (stronger and stiffer but absorbs moisture).
