About 8620H|8620 with guaranteed hardenability band. Same carburizing steel as 8620 but manufactured to meet a Jominy hardenability range per ASTM A304. This matters for gears and drivetrain components where the engineer needs to guarantee a specific case depth and core hardness after carburizing. If the drawing calls out 8620H, the heat treater has tighter parameters to work with and more confidence in the outcome. Functionally machines the same as standard 8620 in the annealed condition. The premium is for the testing and certification. Compare to 8620 (same steel, less guaranteed hardenability) and 86L20 (leaded version for better machinability).
